CSTA 213
Public Address

This course offers experience in the composition, delivery, and criticism of public speeches. The course is online and asynchronous.

In Public Address, we will explore the nature of "the public," what it means to address a public, and how we critique public address.

The course is organized around important moments for public address in the United States:

  • Movement to Abolish Slavery

  • The Presidency

  • The Modern Civil Rights Movement (50s & 60s)

  • #MeToo

  • #BlackLivesMatter

This approach, in addition to examining how public address has influenced these landmark moments in time, will allow us to study the style and substance of more and less well-known orators, including Fredrick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Malcolm X, MLK Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama, Fred Hampton, Tarana Burke, and Patrisse Cullors.

We will learn to make and engage in arguments in public (classroom) debates.

We will also study and critique recent debates between Herschel Walker and Raphael Warnock, and Brian Kemp and Stacey Abrams.
